Avalon High seems like an ordinary school to attend to but in fact it has a mystery attached to it. It is believed that it is somehow connected to the story of the life of King Arthur and the students there are believed to be reincarnation of King Arthur and the knights of the round table and the people during that time.
With parents as professors who spend most of their time on sabbaticals following medieval legend, Ellie Harrison has become accustomed to being moved around. On this latest quest for information, they relocate to Annapolis, Maryland. Although Avalon High seems harmless enough, Ellie finds herself in the middle of a modern-day medieval bout of good versus evil.
Elaine "Ellie" Harrison has just moved in from Minnesota to Maryland while her parents take a year long sabbatical to continue their studies about the medieval time in nearby DC. Her new high school is somewhat you can say the school with stereotypical students: Lance, the jock, Jennifer, the cheerleader, Marco the rebel, and Will the senior class president slash quarter back slash all around good boy who can also be sometimes guy next door. But not everyone in the school appears to be who they really are not even Ellie herself. To stir things up is the character of William Wagner as we all know the good boy next door---but to Ellie, the most beautiful boy in school. Kind, gorgeous and ready to lend a helping hand to anyone, Ellie is taken by complete surprise when he shows an active interest in her. With him already having a girlfriend, things seem really weird, until Ellie finds out that his girlfriend and best friend are in love with each other.
The story eventually turns and it becomes apparent that Avalon High is a situation where in the Arthurian time is repeating itself. The characters Will, Jennifer, Lance, Marco and Mr Morton all correspond to King Arthur, Queen Guinevere, Knight Lancelot, Mordred and Merlin, respectively. As for our lead Ellie, Mr Morton and Marco misinterpret her as Elaine the Lady of Shallot who fell in love with Lancelot yet commits suicide due to her spurned love.
As Jennifer betrays Will to be with Lance the downfall of Will begins, like in the legend where Camelot falls due to the betrayal of Guinevere and Lancelot. Originally, Mr. Morton pairs Ellie with Lance, in hopes that Ellie would attract Lance away from Jennifer, therefore thwarting the betrayal of Will. However, when this plan fails, Mr. Morton tells Ellie to escape when she can, since she apparently no longer has a role in the crisis. Mr. Morton himself says that he is going to Tahiti. Nevertheless, Ellie manages to convince Mr. Morton to stay and help out the people.
But as the story continues we discover that Mr. Morton is more than just a professor. While being assigned to do a report about the Lady of Shallot, Ellie realizes that Mr. Morton, the teacher, is way more than someone who teaches for a paycheck. After learning about Mr. Morton and William's stepbrother's near-death fight the previous year, all the pieces begin to fall into place, and she uncovers a parallel that shockingly resembles the legend of King Arthur and Sir Lancelot.
As a result, Mr. Morton brings in Mrs. Wagner (Wills stepmother) and Will to prompt the confession of Mrs. Wagner. She reveals that Will's stepbrother is really his half-brother making her his real mother. He brought them in to attempt to clear up the family feud and thwart the dark forces from killing Will. However, this only results in the appearance of Marco and Marco learns the truth about his mother as well.
Then, Marco loses control, jumps out of the school’s window, and Will follows him. This triggers the dark forces and suddenly, a seemingly supernatural storm appears. Everybody is rushed home, including Ellie. Ellie stays at home, worrying about what will happen to Will and Marco since they have seemingly disappeared. She receives a call from Will’s mom, revealing that Marco has broken into the gun case and may possibly kill Will. As a result, she realizes that Will must be at his regular hide out, the ravine. She grabs the medieval sword in her father’s study (her father was studying it as a scholar) and runs to the ravine, despite the numerous obstacles that the dark forces throw at her (including a large car, rain, and hail). She reaches the ravine and Marco also shows up, holding up a gun. However, at the last moment, Ellie gives Will the sword and Marco loses courage when he sees the sword. It is revealed that Ellie is not Elaine, the lady of Shallott. Instead, she is the Lady of the Lake who saved Arthur by giving him the sword of Excalibur and eventually brought him to Avalon, to refuge. At the end of the book Will and Ellie get together and Will comes to live with her because his dad kicked him out of the house.
It's a dramatic lively story where in Meg Cabot captured the hearts of teenagers and the attention of evrybody. It's a must read book for all ages and a head turning story. It may be based on the intruiging lively rendition of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table the character, story line and the inricate and delicate details will have readers wanting for more.
